a tempo

"A tempo" is a musical term meaning "return to the original tempo."

Two performers, a man and a woman, repeat a fixed sequence of movements. After a breath, at the cue of the spoken words "a tempo," they begin the same movements again, only slightly slower. Over fifteen minutes, movement and sound are gradually stretched out.

At first, it looks like a quarrel between a man and a woman. A hand moving toward a cheek looks like a slap; two hands on the shoulders, an interrogation; something drawn from behind the back, a weapon. Hatred, anger, and rejection are all there.

As the tempo falls, the same movements come to look, before long, like a hand stroking a cheek, an embrace, a bouquet being offered. The choreography has not changed once. Only the tempo has.

Information, emotions, ways of living, and our surroundings keep getting faster. As time and effort are cut away and the tempo rises, the meaning we originally meant to convey can change shape in transit. Such misunderstandings go unnoticed in daily life and are left uncorrected. They pile up, and in time they become rifts between people, and between nations.

This work is an attempt to unhack "time performance" (taipa), the modern hack culture that prizes speed. It deliberately slows what could be done quickly, deliberately keeps what could be omitted, and returns to the human body what could be left to machines. It is also a return, once, to the original meaning of "hack": spending time on something that benefits no one.

The repeated instruction "a tempo" calls forth, each time, a tempo slower than the one before. Perhaps the "original tempo" does not mean the speed at the start, but the speed people have always carried within them, like a heartbeat, a breath, or the length of a stride.
