A single, all-encompassing stone is carried from the river into the studio. To capture the functions and forces the stone holds, it is treated like a subject of partial differentiation—responding to shifting variables in nature, such as light, that change moment by moment.

As a gesture of “opening” a space for gazing into the future, the work takes the form of a ritual-like performance that saturates the space with past, present, and future.

Carried from the River

The upper reaches of the Meguro River—or perhaps a riverbank connected to it somewhere. Scattered throughout are mooring stones, natural rocks, countless stones strewn across the land. This performance begins by picking up one of these stones and carrying it into the studio.

1F: Awakening

An ordinary space, indistinguishable from daily life. A stone brought in from the river is placed here. One man slowly and carefully lays the stone on the floor; another lets it drop. Two stones that appear similar—are they the same, or entirely different? Symbols are drawn on the floor, marking the distinction.

B1F: Half-Awake

Descending the stairs, a dimly lit space appears, illuminated by faint light streaming through a skylight from above. The stone, now brought downstairs, is held between the backs of the two men's hands and carried forward. For a brief minute, it is washed in light. The word “pass” appears on a smartphone placed as if the stone had taken a selfie.

B2F: Unconscious

A disorienting, smoky space bathed in strange light—yet oddly calming. The men continuously imprint everything the stone embodies—its issai-gassai—onto the floor and surrounding space. As they do so, they begin to erase the symbols they themselves had drawn.
