Kan-No-To
2025
Artists from Japan and abroad will come together through a collaboration between AiRK (Artist in Residence KOBE)—a residency program that supports creative practice—and Seishin Chuo Hall, a new cultural hub for the Seishin New Town area of Kobe. This initiative will present a performance by two internationally active artists: Daisho Omiya (dance) and Jukan Tateisi (contemporary art).
The two artists will take up residence at AiRK, conducting research in and around Seishin Chuo and engaging with local citizens through workshops selected via an open call. Their creative process will also involve collaboration with KOIAS (Kobe Institute of Atmospheric Studies), offering a fresh perspective on the Seishin New Town environment.
The stage design will be created using discarded materials sourced from companies based in Kobe, with their cooperation. The resulting performance will incorporate this stage set, weaving a narrative inspired by both the natural and urban landscapes of Kobe.
The performance title, "Kannoto," is a re-interpretation of the word “Kobe,” separating it into “kami no to” (gate of the gods). It evokes sacred connotations—like the mythological Amano-Iwato cave from Japanese lore—and frames the venue as a newly opened threshold or ritual space.
